Cleaning the carpets can be one of the most annoying tasks.  Sometimes, vacuums just don’t get everything up, but using a broom doesn’t work, either.  Even without stains or spills, it’s possible for your carpets to start looking worn and ragged.  However, if you follow these cleaning tips, you can keep your carpets looking great for years.

First, one of the main things that make carpets look dirty is, well, dirt.  If you vacuum your carpets once a week or more, you’ll pick up almost all of this loose dirt.  This sort of regular cleaning is good for just about everything in your home, but it’s especially good for your carpet.  By picking up as much dirt as possible, you’ll avoid having it ground into your carpet by frequent walking.

When you move your furniture, do you notice that you can see exactly where every leg of every chair and sofa was?  These imprints will fade over time and shouldn’t really be a concert.  What should be concerning, though, is just how clean the carpet under your furniture is.  Compare it to the carpet you normally walk on.  See a huge different?  If you do, try rearranging your furniture every year or so.  This will shift the areas you walk on and make certain parts of your carpet don’t wear out prematurely.

Finally, just because your carpets look clean, don’t assume they are.  Often, carpets collect dirt and dust down inside them.  To remove this hidden dirt, have your carpets professionally cleaned annually.  This can greatly increase the life of your carpets and keep them looking great.

Having pets is a big responsibility, and it involves more than just feeding them and playing with them.  However, some pet owners forget to take care of some of their pets’ bedding and eating area.

If you have a pet bed or a special blanket that your cat or dog likes to sleep on, you need to wash it on a regular basis.  This serves two purposes.  First, it keeps the bed clean and helps control fleas and other pests.  Second, it removes pet dander and fur, which can help you breath better.  Most pet beds can be put in washing machines.  First, take the bedding outside and shake as much dirt and such off of it as possible.  Second, put it in the washer and run it through by itself.  You may want to even run it through the rinse cycle a couple of times.  Then put it in the dryer to dry.

Pet food and water bowls also need to be cleaned regularly.  If you notice hard water building up on your water bowl, use warmed vinegar to remove the deposits.  Be sure to rinse the bowl very well after you do this.  For food bowls, use a standard kitchen scrubbing brush to remove any build-up.  Again, make certain to rinse off the bowl and dry it well.

Cleaning the kitchen is one of the most important tasks around your home.  After all, you prepare all of your meals there, and you don’t want to end up using dirty dishes or having a dirty worktop.  Here are a few tips for cleaning the kitchen that may make the whole process much easier.

If you’re allergic to harsh chemicals, there are some other ways of disinfecting your counters and your sink that won’t leave you short of breath.  One of these is to use baking soda and vinegar.  Baking soda can be used to remove many different stains on your sink or counters.  Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent, and by mixing it with water and pouring the mixture into a squirt bottle, you have an all-natural disinfectant that also removed odours.  Besides being chemical-free, these two cleaning items are fairly cheap.  Lemon juice can also be used to clean hard water deposits and stains from your sink.

When sweeping, don’t forget to sweep under your fridge and the front of your oven and dishwasher.  Often, dust and other items collect under these appliances.  It’s difficult to get a mop under these appliances, so sweeping often is the only way to clean in these areas.

Don’t let your dirty dishes stack up in the sink.  This can cause your sink to get stained by food scraps.  Be careful when pouring coffee, tea, or soft drinks down your sink.  Coffee especially can stain the sink if it’s allowed to sit in it for several hours.

If you have a rubbish disposal appliance attached in your kitchen, to clean it put a lemon or lime down it to remove the odours.  Then drop some ice cubes down the disposal to sharpen the blades.

Finally, to deal with those difficult microwave stains, first microwave a coffee cup half-filled with water for about two minutes.  The steam from the water will help loosen up any baked-in splatters.

When it comes to hiring a cleaning service, there are several things you should decide before you hire anyone.  Making these lists will help you know exactly what you want out of a cleaning service so you don’t waste time or money.

First, what do you want cleaned?  Which rooms do you want the cleaning service to take care of?  Make a list of rooms you want cleaned and a list of any specific places or pieces of furniture that you want special attention paid to.  Do you want the shelves dusted, the carpets vacuumed, or the tile floors mopped?  What about things like handling laundry, making the beds, and doing the dishes?

Second, prepare a budget.  How much are you willing to pay for each room and task?  Once you’ve got a list of rooms, tasks, and prices, you can start pricing and comparing cleaning services.

Third, once you have quotes from several cleaning services, you need to prioritise your tasks.  If you want to have your floors mopped, you may have to give up having your dishes done.  Decide what is the most important to you and what you can afford.  You may find a cleaning service that offers everything you want for an affordable price, but chances are you won’t.

Fourth, look for references for your shortlisted cleaning services.  Ask the services for professional references (they should be prepared to give them) and check internet sites for recommendations.  Only hire those services that have good references and seem professional.

We all know that a candle-lit dinner can be incredibly romantic, and relaxing in the bath with candles lit all around is very nice, but what happens if those candles get a little too runny?  You end up with candle wax all over your table, floor, or shelf.  While you can scrape it off with a blade, you run the risk of scratching the surface you’re trying to clean.  Instead, there’s a secret trick to easily removing candle wax.

First, get a paper bag.  Any type will do—you can even substitute heavy paper (card stock or heavy construction paper) or a thin piece of cardboard.

Second, get out your iron and set it to a low heat setting.  Don’t set it too high—you don’t want to heat the paper or cardboard to the point where it bursts into flame!

Place the paper sack or cardboard over the dry candle wax and apply the iron.  Continually move the iron around in circles so that one spot doesn’t get too hot.  After a minute or so, lift the iron and the sack/cardboard.  You should see the surface of the cardboard is now covered with candle wax.  Basically, the heat from the iron makes the wax melt again, and it sticks to the cardboard or paper bag.  It may take several minutes, but you will eventually take up all the wax.  If there’s a lot of wax, you may need to use several bags or pieces of cardboard since less wax will stick to it as it becomes more covered.

There you have it—a sure fire way to remove candle wax from any surface!
