If you have a rug at home made out of wool or silk, the chances are it is a handmade piece. These are typically very hard to clean properly and carefully if you do not have the right type of equipment and experience.  If you are dealing with a rug that has particular sentimental value, you should always opt for specialist cleaners instead of attempting to clean it on your own.

When considering cleaning your rug, you must first analyse whether or not your rug is colour safe. Most rugs that were handmade in the last 20 years are instead colour fast but if your rug is older than this the chances are it isn’t.

Assuming your rug is colour fast you can lay it out on the ground outside, preferably on clean concrete or paving, with a drainage system nearby. You can then use an orbiting carpet cleaner to gently clean the rug up and down. You should ensure you rinse the rug thoroughly with a hose afterwards to be certain that all of the detergent has been removed.

If you can, press the rug to remove the water. It is ideal to use a press machine which will remove the majority of the water. You can then leave your rug to air dry the rest of the way.

A professional cleaning company will then hang the rug appropriately. They will also be able to provide professional carpet cleaning equipment such as the orbiting carpet cleaner and the press to ensure your carpet cleaning is handled appropriately and effectively.
